First Aid Checklist for Pet Parents

Writer's picture: Riya YadavRiya Yadav

Accidents and emergencies can happen to pets, just like humans. Having a first-aid kit ready can help you handle minor injuries or emergencies until you can get to the vet. Here’s a simple checklist to build your pet’s first-aid kit.

Pet First Aid

1. Basic Supplies

  • Bandages and Gauze: To cover wounds and stop bleeding.

  • Adhesive Tape: For securing bandages (use pet-safe tape that doesn’t stick to fur).

  • Tweezers: To remove splinters, thorns, or ticks.

  • Antiseptic Wipes: Pet-safe wipes for cleaning cuts and scrapes.

2. Emergency Tools

  • Thermometer: A digital thermometer to check your pet’s temperature (normal range is 99.5°F to 102.5°F).

  • Scissors: For trimming fur around wounds or cutting bandages.

  • Gloves: Disposable gloves for safe handling of injuries.

  • Flashlight: Helps you examine injuries in low light.

3. Medications

  • Prescribed Medications: Include any your pet is currently taking.

  • Hydrogen Peroxide (3%): Only use under vet guidance to induce vomiting if needed.

  • Antihistamines: For allergies, but consult your vet for the correct dose.

4. Comfort and Safety

  • Soft Cloth or Blanket: To keep your pet calm and warm.

  • Temporary Muzzle: Use a soft cloth or bandana to gently wrap around your pet’s mouth if they’re in pain. Even friendly pets can bite when hurt.

5. Contact Information

  • Vet’s Contact: Include your vet’s phone number and a nearby emergency clinic.

  • Poison Control: Keep the pet poison helpline number handy.

6. First-Aid Guide

  • Quick Reference Manual: A simple guide for handling emergencies like choking or wounds. (Make sure to download the quick reference manual, which is at the end)

Be Prepared

Check your kit regularly and replace any expired items. Store it in a place everyone in the house knows.
